The postcode area scam

When a client contacts us, we invariably have to provide an accurate estimate of how many homes are in each "postcode zone" they want us to deliver to. To get this, we therefore usually start with data that is supplied by the Royal Mail.

However, postode areas cover every property, both rural and urban, and the reality of leaflet distribution is that it is not always possible to cover remote rural areas and gain access to some flats. Consequently, the total number of households that can actually be delivered to in a "postcode zone" is often much less than the Royal Mail data suggests.

At Drop 2 Door we focus more on demographic targeting rather than blanketing postcode areas so normally focus on specific areas, e.g. owner occupied housing estates. This results in far more accurate address estimates and consequently a much more efficient use of your leaflets.

Unscrupulous leaflet distribution companies, on the other hand, will often significantly over estimate the total number of homes that they can actually deliver to.

This will result in two things:

  1. their client is overcharged for the work they wish to have carried out and

  2. many of the leaflets they are handing over will be dumped (since there are literally no houses to deliver them to!).

To avoid falling into this trap you must use a company that has good local knowledge of the areas you want covered. Take the time to question them to find out how they have reached their estimation of the number of households they say they cover.
